Jeffrey B. Roberts

As a person serving LWOP my work did not begin as a way out prison. I began working towards change in order to live a more peaceful life filled with purpose. I could not imagine being someone who would be able to affect lives in a positive way, until I did.

My work today is centered around combating addiction and the negative effects it causes. I currently work as a certified mentor in the substance use disorder treatment program. This work impacts the lives of so many, as it is not just the one addicted who is suffering.

By living a clean and sober lifestyle we can abolish the need for LWOP as people can think clearly and make positive decisions. Crime will be less likely and less of an option for those returning to their former communities. I anticipate being one of those returnees soon.

The most important part of my work today is being an examples of the change I want to see in the world. I know men and women are returning home from these gated communities and will be faced with challenging decisions. I want to help prepare them to make the best decision and to not create anymore victims. I must be the example of what change looks like so others can see for themselves that it is possible.
